Overview

Science, religion and philosophy intersect in many ways, and raise many fascinating issues. Are science and religion in conflict? Or do science and religion operate in separate spheres? If so, do these spheres overlap? Is religious belief rational? Is there a scientific method, and if so, what is it? Does philosophy provide a neutral framework within which to evaluate the claims of science and religion?

We shall not be seeking a set of definitive answers to these questions; rather, we shall be acquiring the tools to discuss and think about these issues in a deeper and more informed fashion. We will be exploring the claims of philosophy to provide a neutral way of exploring the scientific and religious world-views.

Tutor: Dr. Jim Driscoll

Description

There are three sections to the course:

1. Philosophy of science. What is the scientific method? Does science give us a true description of reality?

2. Philosophy of religion. Is religious belief rational? Do we need religion to ground morality? Can we prove the existence of God, and does it matter if we cannot?

3. The philosophical method. What is philosophy? What methods does it use to investigate the world? Is philosophy continuous with science, or is it a fundamentally different form of enquiry? Can philosophy offer a way of evaluating religious claims?

We will use Richard Dawkins’ provocative book The God Delusion as a way of structuring our approach to these issues. Many of the topics that he discusses will be developed in more detail.

The course will largely be discussion based. You will be set a small amount of reading for each day, which will form the basis of the class. No previous experience of philosophy is required.
