This summer course is designed to give students an overview of the topic areas studied in Psychology: Developmental Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, The Study of the Brain, and Personality Types in Psychology. A strong focus upon Cognitive (Working Memory) Psychology will be retained throughout the course.
These topics have been designed and chosen specifically to show students the wide range of applications that Psychology can have in the real world, and how these areas could be investigated through experimental and non-experimental investigations.
Students will be presented with a series of research scenarios and will be asked to design their own investigations using the knowledge and methods that have been discussed during the course. A distinction will be made regarding the types of research methods used in Psychology (quantitative and qualitative) and discussions will be made surrounding the appropriate use of each method. Students will use this knowledge to prepare both a written report and presentation which outline and evaluate a psychological investigation.
A key aspect of Psychology is following ethical guidelines whilst conducting research, as most studies use human participants. The summer course is designed to highlight the importance of ethical procedures and what can happen if procedures are not followed accordingly. Students will be provided with examples of when ethical considerations need to be made, in both adult and developmental contexts.
It is important too, to consider the historical and contemporary place Psychology holds as discipline. Class excursions to sites such as Bedlam and the Freud Museum in London will provide a critical socio-historical angle to the discipline, allowing students to explore the age-old debate: is Psychology an art or a science? Students will also engage with the practical side of the discipline via project-based empirical work.
A final aim of the course is to present students with details about both educational and employment prospects. They will be able to explore the career opportunities that can develop from studying Psychology, holding discussions with current PhD students on how their career path has started to develop. We aim to show students the wide range of career opportunities a Psychology course can bring, including roles in academic, clinical and research departments.

Why take this course?
This course provides an intellectually stimulating introduction to the fascinating and complex subject of psychology. Psychology is an excellent subject in which to gain a solid grounding, as its concepts govern our everyday lives and interactions with others. An understanding of psychology will therefore help you to interpret the world around you, and will develop your appreciation of what is driving other people to behave in a certain way, whether they be colleagues, fellow students, employees, employers or anyone else!
Whether you’re a gap year or undergraduate student, the course is a productive use of part of your summer, and will provide you with a beneficial educational experience that will add tangible value to your CV. The study of psychology also teaches a number of transferable skills, such as scientific research and the ability to think analytically; these will be of great benefit at university and in the workplace.
Every summer, ORA welcomes hundreds of the world’s brightest, most academically gifted students to our Oxford courses. In 2016, attendees came from 108 different nations, each bringing with them unique cultures, perspectives and stories to share with their new friends.

Our Psychological and Behavioural Science programme has been developed by Dr Laura Jenkins, a Psychology Demonstrator at Oxford Brookes University. Laura’s specialisms include functional working memory, and she had dedicated the past three years to teaching the discipline.

Guest Lectures and Debates
At ORA, we go the extra mile to enhance the study abroad experience of our students. As part of this, every year our dedicated Events Team organises a series of fascinating guest lectures. Leadership is important in any profession and workplace, and so this year students will be invited to attend an afternoon of guest speakers discussing inspirational, political, and entrepreneurial leadership at the Saïd Business School. Speakers include Dr. Tereza Capelos, Senior Lecturer in Political Psychology; Dr. Simon Adderley, Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship at Oxford Brookes University; and Jenny Garrett – an award winning Executive Career Coach, Inspirational Leadership Trainer, TEDx Speaker, and entrepreneur! Our students also have the opportunity to watch and participate in a number of debates, which take place on campus. These range from formal Panel Debates to informal discussions about current ‘hot topics’ led by ORA staff.

The United Kingdom has a rich cultural heritage, and a course with Oxford Royale Academy is the perfect way to explore this. All ORA courses include coach excursions to places of historical and social significance in the UK. On the Psychological and Behavioural Science programme, attendees will board the ORA coach to two such destinations. Last summer’s coach excursions included visits to Blenheim Palace and London.
You will be studying for the bulk of your time in Oxford, but it’s not all work and no play. You will have some days off, during which we will organise exciting day trips to interesting places such as London, Blenheim Palace or Stratford-upon-Avon. In the evening, you can look forward to entertainment options ranging from cookery competitions and movie nights to salsa dancing lessons. At the end of the course, you’ll celebrate your achievements in a special graduation ceremony and dinner, bringing your time with Oxford Royale Academy to a memorable conclusion.
Some past afternoon activities enjoyed by our students include the following:
- Punting: travel the waterways of the River Cherwell in a flat-bottomed boat, using a five-metre-long pole to propel your vessel! This mode of transport is unique to Oxford and Cambridge.
- Summer sports: have you ever played the traditional English game of croquet? There will be the chance to do so on the lawns of your campus! Real tennis (a variation of tennis played indoors, with a heavier ball) has also been enjoyed by our previous students.
- College and museum tours: An ORA course is the perfect opportunity to visit some of the University of Oxford’s most famous Colleges (including New College, Magdalen College and Christ Church). You will also have the chance to visit Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum – famous for being the world’s first university museum.
- Dance and music workshops: have you ever wanted to try Indian dance? How about Salsa dancing? Or drumming? Experts in these art forms will be dropping in to our campuses to run workshops, allowing our students to unleash their creative sides.
The events and entertainment on offer don’t stop when the sun starts to go down at our campuses! The following will be available to every student on this programme:
- Outdoor theatre: many Oxford Colleges put on Shakespeare plays in their quads and gardens throughout the summer months.
- Karaoke in Oxford: head to a venue in Oxford and sing along to the latest hits.
- Themed parties at local hotels and country houses: head to a local venue and enjoy dinner and dancing with your friends from around the world; past venues include Ardington House in Oxfordshire and The Randolph Hotel in the city of Oxford. Every party has a theme: Hollywood, Venetian Masquerade and The Olympics are examples of past themes.
- Graduation: a formal graduation ceremony will be held on the last night of your course. This is followed by your Graduation dinner and party — a glamorous conclusion to your stay in Oxford!
Oxford Royale Academy’s summer programmes are designed with the academic rigour of their prestigious environment firmly in mind.
