Oxford Royale Summer Schools’s Business Discovery Plus programme offers students aged 11-12 the opportunity to live and study in St Mary’s School in Ascot, a top UK boarding school. This one-week course will introduce students to the basic principles of business from an academic perspective.

Course Summary

On this one-week intensive course, students will learn about the aims and objectives of businesses and how they successfully operate. They will also cover topics such as consumer needs versus wants, the costs and risks of starting a business and explore modern marketing techniques. A variety of relevant and famous products will be examined in detail to discover what makes them successful before students delve into the exciting challenge of creating a product idea of their own.

At the end of the week, students will present their product at a Dragon’s Den-style product launch, where other groups will act as the Dragons and ask them to defend their product and the methodology of their business.

What to expect from the Business Discovery Plus course

Students participating in Oxford Royale Academy’s Business Discovery Plus course will learn all the relevant aspects of business and marketing.

In addition to rigorous academic theory, students will have the chance to get creative when they come to produce their own business idea and take it to fruition, from product design to sales pitches and through to customer delivery.

Course Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will have:

  • Understood the key theories behind businesses and how they operate
  • Gained business planning and product development experience through a marketable product project
  • Improved their communication, team and leadership skills through group project work
  • Gained confidence in dealing with a wide range of new people and situations
  • Refined their communication skills in speaking, listening and presenting effective arguments in a variety of different contexts
  • Gained responsibility for their own learning, time management and working with others

Topics covered

This intensive week of business study covers all the key questions behind relevant business theories, such as:

Defining needs versus wants, and products versus services, which are used to fulfil these needs and wants. How do they differ? The aims and objectives of companies. How do they differ from each other?
Case Studies of the vision and mission of existing companies will be explored, using high-profile brands as an example.
The Marketing Mix and how it affects business decisions, including an overview of social media and how is has changed the way products are marketed.
The typical start-up costs of a business, (Premises, production, employees, heating and lighting, insurance, etc).

Students will explore their business idea from all relevant angles, before launching it to their peers in a Dragon's Den style launch event.

Useful information for students & parents

Accommodation

Students will be accommodated in comfortable twin or dormitory rooms, separated by gender - please contact our registrations team if you would like more information. Accommodation is the standard accommodation for school pupils who study at St Mary's School, Ascot, so students are able to get a flavour for what being a pupil at this prestigious UK boarding school is like. Bathrooms are typically shared between students of the same gender.

Pastoral care & student welfare

The programme is overseen by the Programme Director, who implements the day-to-day running of the programme. The Director is assisted by a team of Counsellors who are there to help pupils with their daily needs and to run activities for them outside of class. The Counsellors ensure that students are looked after pastorally, culturally and socially during their programme. Students are able to talk informally and frankly to the Counsellors in order to raise concerns or to discuss their course. Residential staff live in the school throughout the programme and are able to assist students at any time of the day or night.

Eligibility & pre-requisites

Students on this course:

  • Must conform to our age policy.
  • Must be fluent or near-fluent English language speakers – if you are unsure whether your English level is suitable for this programme, please contact our Registrations Team on admin@oxford-royale.co.uk and they will be able to assist you.
  • Must be able to fulfil the basic requirements of the programme, in terms of attendance at lessons, meals and events. Please contact our Registrations Team for more detailed information.

Guest Lectures & Debates

At ORA, we go the extra mile to enhance the study abroad experience of our students. As part of this, every year our dedicated Events Team organises a series of workshops for our junior students in either a Science or Arts topic. In previous years, guest science speakers from the Royal Institution have delivered fascinating science workshops and experiments to our young students.
