Course Summary

The Business and Enterprise Programme is designed to provide students aged 16-18 with a summer course consisting of both academic classes in international business and group activities focusing on leadership. The course is aimed at students who plan to study business at University – the business leaders of the future!

Students are taught the principles of business management, economics and finance in small groups, and will be given the opportunity to learn the principles of accounting, finance, marketing, human resources and business ethics.

In addition to the academic classes, skills-based workshops will develop the students’ presentation and leadership skills for the benefit of their future business goals. The programme will include a competitive element in which students will work as a group to research, design and market a new business idea.

The programme will culminate with an enterprise fair during which students will have the opportunity to present their ideas to others within the school.

Where could the Business and Enterprise Programme lead you?

Why choose Business and Enterprise Programme for 16-18 years?

The Business and Enterprise Programme is for ambitious students who consider themselves budding entrepreneurs or the business leaders of tomorrow. You’ll be aged between 16 and 18, and you’ll think of yourself as a Bill Gates or Richard Branson of the future. You’ll probably count shows such as The Apprentice and Dragons’ Den among your favourite television programmes, and you perhaps even see yourself as a future contestant on one of them. Whether you’re intent on setting up and running your own business, or you see yourself rising up the ranks in a multinational corporation, this course is for you.

The Business and Enterprise Programme is also suitable for students who merely want to learn more about business, perhaps to support A-level study in a related subject, such as Business Studies or Economics. It’s the ideal background for a business career of any kind, so your longer-term ambitions don’t have to revolve around your becoming a global business giant in order to benefit from attending this course. What’s more, attending this course is a good way of finding out whether or not business is something you want to pursue at university.

How will the Business and Enterprise Programme help me?

The Business and Enterprise Programme is designed to be as useful as possible in giving you the strong foundations you need to get started on the right track for a competitive business career. It will introduce students to the background theories surrounding economics and business management, providing an understanding of how a business works. Students will develop their knowledge of all aspects of running a business, such as accounting and finance, marketing, human resources, market research, business ethics and what makes businesses fail – all valuable preparation for a business career. Students will also look at real-life case studies and be set fun business challenges of their own, giving you a deeper appreciation of what’s involved in setting up and running a business of your own, and of the hard work that goes into developing, researching and bringing a product or service to market.

Is this course for me?

If you would like to gain relevant experience for your CV, or to talk about at university interviews, and would like to gain an edge over your peers, then this course is for you.

Topics covered

This is one of the most popular elements of the Business and Enterprise Programme. Things get highly competitive as groups of students formulate business ideas and present them along with finance figures, sales and marketing ideas and a business report - all while fending off probing questions from “The Dragons” (i.e. teachers.)

To be successful in business, you’ll almost certainly find yourself having to manage other people. To do this effectively and get the most from your employees, you’ll need to become adept at motivating other people. While this course doesn’t claim to transform you into the perfect business leader in just two weeks, what it will do is give you an understanding of the techniques managers can use to motivate their employees.

Presentations are a fact of life when you’re in business, when you’ll have to pitch your business ideas, products or services to clients, customers and investors. If you dislike having to give presentations at school, or you simply feel that there’s room for improvement in your style and technique, this is your chance to conquer your apprehension and learn how to deliver a slick and impressive presentation.

Most business people will tell you that business is fundamentally about getting on with other people - it’s why networking is so important. People like to do business with people they like and enjoy working with, and being personable will get you a long way in the world of business.

What will you get out of the Business and Enterprise Programme?

At the end of the course students will be able to understand the workings of key economic models, business concepts and management techniques.

They will comprehend the different objectives that firms may have and understand the factors that affect total revenue and total cost. They will be able to describe how managers seek to motivate workers and discuss the steps through which businesses progress when they start up and the causes of business failure. They will also be experienced in debating the ethical issues faced by firms.

Useful information for students & parents

Students will be accommodated in comfortable single or twin rooms depending on their allocated college - please contact our registrations team if you would like more information. Twin rooms are strictly between students of the same gender, and males/females are separated by corridoor and/or staircase. Accommodation is the standard accommodation for university undergraduates who study at the university, so students are able to get a flavour for what being an undergraduate at the university might be like. Bathrooms are typically shared between students of the same gender, though in some cases en-suite facilities are available.

Pastoral care & student welfare

The programme is overseen by the Programme Director, who implements the day-to-day running of the programme. The Director is assisted by a team of Counsellors who very often are current members of the University of Oxford or University of Cambridge. The Counsellors ensure that students are looked after pastorally, culturally and socially during their programme. Students are able to talk informally and frankly to the Counsellors in order to raise concerns or to discuss university applications. Each campus has members of residential staff who live in the college throughout the programme and are able to assist students at any time of the day or night.
