A returning student to St Catherine's College, University of Oxford.
After being introduced to the study of politics at ORA, Georgios plans to study Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE) at university.
Back in December 2015, I was searching online for summer courses that I could attend during my summer vacation and at some point, I visited the website of ORA without really knowing what it was. The reviews were exceptional and thus, I decided to apply for it; a decision that I am proud of making. My course session was at the beginning of July 2016 and I had opted for Economics and Politics and International Relations as my morning lessons and Leadership and Teambuilding as my afternoon workshop.
At the beginning, before attending ORA, I was a bit apprehensive, as it was the first time that I would travel alone and the first time that I would find myself in an academic environment, where I literally knew nobody. However, once I arrived at St. Catherine’s College, this apprehension was extinguished and I had the best two weeks of my life. I learnt indeed people from all over the world (from Australia, Spain, France, Italy, Russia, Indonesia etc.) and with some of them, I have kept contact with until today. Hence, once I got back home from this first ORA experience, I immediately decided that I would return the following year, which I also did.
ORA 2017 was even better, as this time I did not have any anxiety before my course and as I was counting the days until embarking on my trip to England. In my second year in ORA, I undertook Maths and Economics as my morning courses and Public Speaking and Debate was my afternoon workshop. Again, I made many new friends from various countries and especially from Cyprus, Spain, France, Austria and Taiwan and again I created awesome memories that I will remember for many years.
Furthermore, ORA has played a significant role both in my school and as far as my university application is concerned. In ORA 2016, I had my first encounter with the worlds of Politics and Economics and I was truly fascinated by both fields. Thanks to ORA, I managed to settle on Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) as the course that I would like to study at university. Apart from that, I am a passionate MUNer (Model United Nations participant) and thus, having completed a course on Politics in ORA, I gained great insight as regards the meaning of this field, which of course helped me at my MUN career.
The reason why some many people attend ORA every year is far more than simple in my opinion. ORA gives young people the opportunity to familiarise themselves with an academic environment, since all lessons take place within the facilities of the University of Oxford and at the same time to have a pleasant and a nice time, as they can stroll around the beautiful streets of Oxford with their new friends, explore its sites and take part in many exciting activities like punting or ghost touring. Now, when I reminisce my times in ORA, I cannot forget the tasty milkshakes I had while doing my homework on the grass, the awesome parties and the excursions I attended and of course the graduation ceremony.
Now, that I know what ORA stands for, I am more than proud to have found this summer school and to have made the right choice to attend it. Although I will not be attending ORA for a third year, as this year I am a senior high school student, I am more than delighted to belong to the ORA Alumni community and as I have mentioned, I am more than fortunate that ORA has been a part of my life.
